AIPJD flays K'taka Speaker for biased behaviour

Bangalore, Jul 18: The All India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) today alleged that Karnataka Assembly Speaker Krishna had denigrated the office he held by denying an opportunity to former Deputy Chief Minister and AIPJD leader Siddharamaiah to make a statement on the floor of the House before resigning his seat.

Addressing a press conference here, AIPJD firebrand leader A K Subbaiah said the Speaker had behaved in a ''partisan manner'' in the House and working as per the wishes of former Prime Minister and JD (S) President H D Deve Gowda.

He said Mr Siddharamaiah, who had won the seat on a JD (S) ticket, had every right to explain the reasons behind his decision to quit the Assembly seat and claimed that there were no rules barring a legislator from making a statement on the matter.

Mr Subbaiah said there were precedents in both the Assembly and Council of legislators being given an opportunity to speak in the House before submitting their resignation.

He opined that the opposition parties should move a no-confidence motion against the Speaker for his behaviour.

Mr Subbaiah also came down heavily on BJP MLC Janardhana Reddy for retracting his bribery charges against Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Forests Minister Chennigappa.
