TN CM plea to PM on quota in edu institutions

Chennai, May 22: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to promulgate an ordinance for implementing 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions.

In a letter to Dr Singh, a copy of which was released to the media here, he said it had been one of the long pending demands of people of Tamil Nadu, especially those belonging to OBCs, that there should be reservation in admission to educational institutions like IITs and IIMs.

The expectations of the people of Tamil Nadu were enhanced when the Centre announced its proposal to implement 27 per cent reservation in government controlled/financed institutions, he said.

''As the very future of the downtrodden communities is linked with this affirmative action, we request that this announcement may be implemented fully without any dilution or postponement,'' the Chief Minister stressed.

Mr Karunanidhi said the OBCs living all over the country would be grateful to the Centre if urgent action was taken on his request.
