SIMI likely to be banned; UP against central move

Lucknow, May 22 (UNI) Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) is set to be banned shortly with the Centre issuing a show cause notice to the organisation.

However, the Uttar Pradesh government today clarified it would not support the centre's move.

A state home department spokesperson said since the organisation was not involved in ''any activities'' and neither had it (UP) received any complaint against SIMI, UP would not support the ban.

The show cause was communicated to the UP Director General of Police (DGP) headquarters here yesterday, a senior police official confirmed.

The notice is part of that the overall process to ban SIMI. The office of the Registrar, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal at Delhi, issued a show cause on anyone who wanted to plead the case.

The notice claimed the centre had initiated the proceedings as per the notification dated February 6, 2006 published in the Gazette of India.

After the expiry of the notice period of 30 days, the final proceedings for announcing the ban will come into being.

The notice was released yesterday by the DGP headquarters here for public information.
