SIMI likely to be banned

Lucknow, May 22 (UNI) Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) is likely to be banned shortly with the Centre issuing a show notice to the organisation.

The show cause was communicated to the Director General of Police (DGP) headquarters here yesterday, a senior police official confirmed.

The notice is part of the overall process to ban SIMI. The office of the Registrar, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal at Delhi, issued a show cause on anyone who wanted to plead the case.

The notice claimed that the centre had initiated the proceedings as per the notification dated February 6, 2006 published in the Gazette of India.

After the expiry of the notice period of 30 days, the final proceedings for announcing the ban will come into being. On Sunday, the notice was released by the DGP headquarters here for public information.
