Roman Catholics in Kolkata not giving importance to the Code

Kolkata, May 22 (UNI) At a time when several Christian bodies have come out against the release of Ron Howard's film "The Da Vinci Code", Roman Catholics in Kolkata tend to view it in a different light.

The "Bangiya Christo Parisheba" is not willing to pay much importance to the subject when elsewhere the church authorities had come together tow put forth their suggestions to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Censor board is busy mulling over the subject of its release and the kind of disclaimer it should carry.

Mr Herrod Mallick of the society told UNI, "We are unwilling to raise any hue and cry over the release of the film. This gives it more publicity.

"Besides, we all know what has been shown in the film and written in the book and it is merely a work of fiction. It has no grain of truth. We have strong belief in our religion and it shall not be swayed by such work of art. However, care should be taken so that sentiments of people who live by it is not hurt," he said.

"A religion that has survived 2000 years and bigger onslaughts and more serious ones should not be concerned with such small things.

Finally, if we have to agitate to prove our point in favour of Christianity, it loses its importance," he opined.

"The rational and educated people will understand the truth as it is and the poor and uneducated who live by the religion have neither read the book nor will go to see the film. So where is the concern?" he asked.

The script of the controversial film says Da Vinci had incorporated a code in his paintings which suggests that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and sired a child.
