Over 70 per cent clear HS science exam in Asom

Guwahati, May 22 (UNI) Over 70 per cent pass percentage was recorded in today's class XII examination results of science stream, conducted by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).

The top position in the ten state ranks declared by the Council was grabbed by Salt Brooke Academy, Dibrugarh, while Cotton College, Guwahati, had six students in the top ranks.

Of the total 14,373 students who had taken the examination conducted in late February, 10,423 students cleared it. The total percentage was 72.52.

In a repeat of previous years, girls once again outshone boys in total pass percentage. A total of 75.77 per cent girls were declared successful against 71.17 per cent boys.

Altogether 449 students obtained star marks (75 per cent and above) while 3,242 passed out in the first division.

AHSEC chairman Dilip K Kakati had yesterday announced that Rs 1,000 and a merit certificate would be awarded to students securing star marks.

Anjanmoni Mudoi stood first in the state with 450 marks out of 500 marks. Monikongkana Hazarika and Anup Sharma, both of Cotton College, came second and third respectively with 444 and 441 marks each.

Besides the top slot, the Salt Brooke Academy had two more students in the top ten. Darrang College grabbed two positions while Lumding College, Srimanta Shankardev Academy and Dhing College had one representation each in the top list.

Kalam has a solution for chain-pulling in trains

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) If the Indian Railways is grappling with chain-pulling by unscrupulous elements, President A P J Abdul Kalam has a solution: Make use of technology. ''Though this (chain pulling) system provides an opportunity for the passengers to unilaterally stop the train in emergency, majority of the time this system has been used by wrong elements,'' said Dr Kalam, who was the chief guest at the Railway Protection Force (RPF) ceremonial parade.....

Munda to receive Mother Teresa Millenium Award

Ranchi, May 22 (UNI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda has been selected for the prestigious 'Mother Teresa Millenium Award' as politician of the year 2006. The selection committee has shortlisted 39 other prominent personalities in the fields of education, culture, music, social work, sports, industry, media, medicine, best principal and best youth worker. Gold drops 3.5 pct on firm dollar, volatile

LONDON, May 22 (Reuters) Volatile gold prices fell 3.5 percent to their lowest in nearly four weeks on Monday and dragged down mining shares as a firm dollar prompted investors to get out of the market, dealers said. Other precious metals also declined, with silver slipping four percent to a one-month low before partially recovering. ''It's going to be extremely volatile.
