Music director gets Ghantasala Award

Vijayawada, May 22 : The Dilip Kumar Cultural Academy (DKCA) presented the 'Ghantasala Award' to well-known Film Music Director M S Viswanathan here last night.

The award was presented to Mr Viswanathan by Senior Journalist Turlapati Kutambarao.

The felicitation formed part of the 'Ghantasala Aradhanotsavam'.

In his address, Mr Viswanathan said he was only a beginner and had a long way to go. He drew inspiration from yesteryear music directors C V Subbiraman and S Rajeswara Rao besides playback singers Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi and Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao.

He later sung a Tamil devotional song receiving standing ovation from the audience.

The earlier recipients of the award include noted playback singer P Susheela and music directors Mani Sharma and Devi Sri Prasad among others.

Indian cleaner from AP commits suicide in Dubai

Dubai, May 22 : A 28-year-old Indian cleaner from Andhra Pradesh, who was unable to return home for six years, committed suicide by consuming toilet-cleaning liquid. According to friends Naresh Gattu was not able to afford a ticket to return home and had fallen into depression. He leaves behind two sisters and a younger brother. This is the second reported suicide among low-paid workers in just two days. Indian electrician, Iqbal Alam, hung himself in a labour camp on.....

U.S-led forces strike Taliban, up to 50 dead

Kabul, May 22 : Aircraft from a U.S.-led force in Afghanistan attacked Taliban strongholds today and may have killed up to 50 of the insurgents, a spokesman for the force said.The attack was launched in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province where last week heavy fighting erupted between Taliban and Afghan and foreign troops.''We believe up to 50 Taliban may have been killed,'' said the spokesman, Major Scott Lundy.Reuters.....

Major fire breaks out in Latur

Latur, Maharashtra, May 22 : A major fire broke out in the godowns of Om Enterprises and Tina Oil Mill, the two leading vanaspati oil distributors, in Ganjgolai Market in the city here today.The fire broke out at about 0500 hrs. At least five fire engines from Latur and neighbouring Osmanabad towns have rushed to the spot and are busy trying to put the blaze under control.
