New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) Rajya Sabha members today sought better government protection for the small and tiny sector industries, stating that their problems like sickness and lack of credit should be addressed with utmost priority.
Participating in the debate on the Small-Micro and Medium Enterprises Bill, 2006, the members said it was not fair to club all the three segments - tiny, small and medium- for the purposes of fiscal and other incentives.
CPI-M member Tapan Kumar Sen said the SSI got a raw deal while the large units flourished. This was not the right policy since it is only in the small scale industries that the new jobs are created.
The SSI units are the victims of industrial sickness. He said the good old concept of reservation for the small sector has been given a goodbye and the tiny units have been left high and dry to compete against the multi-national companies.
Congress member EMS Nathciappan said the features of the bill like arbitration council were welcome and he was happy with the government which is bringing about this composite piece of legislation.
Independent member P C Alaxander said the clubbing of all the three categories of small, tiny and medium enterprises was not the right thing, since different segments faced different problems. BJP member Surendra Ladh agreed with Dr Alaxander and said the problems of medium and small scale sectors were different and could not be clubbed.
