LS adjourned due to lack of quorum

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) Lack of quorum in the Lok Sabha prevented the introduction of the Food Safety and Standards Bill, 2005 leading to adjournment of the House this evening.

Mr Varkala Radhakrishnan (CPI-M) objected to the introduction of the Bill without sufficient members in the House as soon as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Food Processing Industries Subodh Kant Sahai got up to move the Bill.

''We will be making a mockery of the House if we move this important Bill without proper discussion,'' Mr Radhakrishnan said, forcing Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal to adjourn the House.

The Bill seeks to consolidate the laws relating to food and to establish a Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for laying down science-based standards for articles of food.
