Lok Sabha condemns militant attack on Cong. rally

New Delhi, May 22 : The Lok Sabha today condemned the militant attack on a Congress rally in Srinagar yesterday in which seven people were killed and 20 injured, and members observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives.

As soon as the House assembled at 1100 hrs, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee read out a resolution condemning the killings and described the attack as an act of cowardice.

''Such attacks would not weaken the Jammu and Kashmir people's resolve for a peaceful solution of the problems, being faced by the state,'' Mr Chatterjee said.

Three civilians and two policemen were killed, and at least 20 people injured when two militants dressed in police uniforms opened fire at the rally organised by the Youth Congress to observe the 15th death anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The militants were later shot dead by security forces.
