Koirala expands Cabinet in Nepal

Kathmandu, May 22 (UNI) Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today expanded his Cabinet, including some members from the three major parties of the seven-party alliance.

There are 12 Ministers and six Minister of State in the 18-member Cabinet of the three major parties -- the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Nepali Congress Democratic.

Prime Minister Kirala retains the portfolio of Defence, Royal Palace Affairs and Health.

Deputy Speaker Chitra Lekha Yadav of the Nepali Congress Democratic is the new Water Resources Minister while three other members of the same party are also included in the Cabinet.

Nepali Congress has seven members, including the Prime Minister, CPN-UML six, Nepali Congress Democratic four and one from United Left Front.

There is no member from Nepal Sadbhavana Party (A), Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party and Peoples Front of the seven-party alliance in the Cabinet expansion.

The leaders of the seven parties had agreed to divide the portfolio of the Cabinet on the basis of their seats represented in the 205 seat Lower House of parliament.

Prof Swaminathan, Sivathenu Pillai receive Raja Ram Mohan award

Kolkata, May 22 (UNI) The prestigious Ram Mohan Puraskar, 2006, was conferred on noted scientists M S Swaminathan and A Sivathanu Pillai at a function here today. Ram Mohan Mission founder and President Sankar Biswas handed over a cash award of Rs five lakh each along with a citation and a gold medal to the two scientists for their contribution to science and society. Describing Raja Ram Mohan as the first person to talk of gender.....

AITUC to take out rally for unorganised workers

Hyderabad, May 22 (UNI) All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) National Secretary Satyanarayana Thakur today announced a massive rally at Delhi to protest against the UPA Government's attitude towards unorganised sector employees. Speaking to mediapersons here, he alleged the government has 'totally deviated' from the assurances made in the Common Minimum Programme. Pointing out to its assurance on a law for the benefit of the unoraganised workers, Mr Thakur said two years had passed.....

More SC/ST children go to school under SSA

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The percentage of out of school children in the Scheduled Caste category has declined from 31.87 per cent in 2001 to 8.17 per cent in 2005 under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeshwari said in a written reply that the percentage of out of school ST students has declined from 40.01 percent in 2001 to 9.54 percent in.....
