Kodiyeri vows to free police from mafia influence

Kannur, Kerala, May 22 (UNI) Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan today said the Police department would be freed from 'mafia' influence and such groups had no future in the State.

Addressing a meet-the-press-programme here, he said strong action would be taken against policemen who used 'third degree' measures and violated human rights.

The Minister said transfers in the police department would be taken up only on a merit basis.

A high level meeting of police officials would be held in Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow.

Mr Balakrishnan, who is also Tourism Minister, said the sector would be promoted in the state and participation of the private sector would be taken up later.

'Delhi not honouring power-for-water deal'

Lucknow, May 22 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh government today alleged the central and Delhi governments were not honouring the power-for-water agreement. ''The centre has promised to give 600 Mw of additional power to UP, but till date only 50 Mw has been given,'' said state energy minister Shivpal Singh Yadav. Addressing a news conference here, Mr Yadav said the centre and the Delhi government were not honoring the agreement, even as UP was giving enough water.....

Azad for all steps to improve sports infrastructure in J

Srinagar, May 22 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has directed the authorities to take necessary steps to upgrade the sports infrastructure in the state's summer capital. He said directions have already been issued to upgrade the Bakshi stadium, the Indoor stadium, the Youth hostel and other stadia to develop them on international standards. Mr Azad said the youth of the state possessed great potential in all.....

France must be wary of Swiss, says coach Raymond

PARIS, May 22: France must be wary of Switzerland, their first opponents at the World Cup, coach Raymond Domenech said today.The French and Swiss meet in their opening match in Group G in Stuttgart on June 13.''I'm not really happy to have to take on the Swiss,'' Domenech told a news conference at Tignes ski resort in the Alps. ''We know them and they know us.''It's the match I'm worried about for the time being,'' Domenech.....
