India welcomes Al-Maliki government in Iraq

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) India today welcomed the formation of a new Government in Iraq, headed by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, and reiterated the willingness to continue assistance in the reconstruction of the war-torn country.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent a message of congratulations to Mr Al-Maliki wishing him success in carrying out his new responsibilities and wishing the people of Iraq success in their efforts to bring peace, prosperity and stability in the country.

The Prime Minister also said India looked forward to further strengthening the traditionally close and friendly relations between the two peoples and countries in all fields.

Asserting that the new government in Iraq ''represents all sections of the Iraqi society,'' an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said the Prime Minister had reiterated India's willingness to continue its assistance in the reconstruction of Iraq and to cooperate with the country in areas of mutual interest.

7 killed, 1 injured as train hits tipper

Hubli, May 22 (UNI) Seven people, including three women and two girls, were killed and one injured when a tipper in which they were travelling was hit by the Hubli-bound Janashatabdi train at an unmanned level crossing between Byadagi and Devargudda stations this afternoon. RS approves Taxation Laws Amendment Bill

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha today passed the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill, 2006, that aims at curbing unaccounted (black) money and widen the tax base. The new law amends a host of taxation laws, including the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the Customs Act, 1962. New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks Laws) Amendment Bill, 2006, which allows the subsidiary banks to raise resources from the market and increase their authorised capital to Rs 500 crore, was introduced in the Lok Sabha today.
