IIT, Madras proposes to set up Research Park near campus

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has submitted a proposal to set up a research park adjacent to its campus, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Human Resource Development M A A Fatmi said in a written reply the government does not propose to set up IIT research park in the country. However, IIT Madras has submitted its proposal.

In another reply, he said that at present there was no proposal before the government to upgrade or expand any of the Regional Engineering Colleges to IIT level.

He said nearly 2.99 lakh aspirants appeared for IIT-JEE against 5444 seats in seven IITs, Information Technology-Banaras Hindu University and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.

These institutes are autonomous in nature and could endeavour to increase the intake depending upon the infrastructure available with them, he said.

Monsoon deficit to impact agriculture: Govt

New Delhi, May 22: Minister of State for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal today said as per India Meteorological Department's operational Long Range Forecast the South-West Monsoon rainfall over the entire country would be shortfall to the extent of 22 per cent.Answering a question in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Sibal said shortfall in rains of various nature would adversely affect agricultural production. FM refuses to make off-the-cuff statement on stock markets

New Delhi, May 22: Finance Minister P Chidambaram today refused to make any statement on the recent fluctuations in stock markets, saying ''an off-the-cuff remark'' can have very damaging implications for the bourses.Responding to concerns raised in the Rajya Sabha by former Finance Minister and BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, Mr Chidambaram said, ''It will be inappropriate to make an off-the-cuff statement. It has to be a considered view...Off-the-cuff remarks can have very damaging implications for the stock market.'' Mr Chidambaram.....

Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill introduced in LS

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) Finance Minister P Chidambaram today moved The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2006 in the Rajya Sabha, seeking to amend a host of taxation laws, including the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the Customs Act, 1962. The Amendment Bill also seeks to amend The Customs Tariff Act, 1975, and the Central Excise Act, 1944.
