Home Ministry urged to help Manipur rape victims

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) CPI-M MP Brinda Karat today demanded the Home Ministry's intervention to ensure that the rape victims from Manipur, staying in camps in Mizoram now, were not pressurised to move back to mined and unsafe villages.

Raising in the Rajya Sabha the issue of Hamar tribal women, including five minor girls, allegedly raped by militants belonging to the UNLF and KCP four months ago, Ms Karat said after the matter reached National Commission for Women, the Mizoram government had issued an ultimatum to the victims to move back to the villages and was asked in writing to stop food grain supply.

He said the distraught women, if pushed out of their present camps, had no place to go and their militancy-torn villages were totally unsafe for habitation.

The Ministry should ensure that their stay will last till normalcy returns to their villages and that they get compensation to overcome the trauma.

Several MPs associated themselves with Ms Karat's mention.
