Govt imposes ban on outside cement

Aizawl, May 22 (UNI) In order to control the quality and price of cement in the region, the Mizoram government has notified suspension of its import from outside the state.

The state food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department has also set up a state level coordination committee, on quality control of cement and iron rod, to check and monitor the quality of cement and other related materials.

A meeting of the Quality Control Coordination Committee held here in the office of Supply minister K Sangthuama came to a decision to enforce with stricter measures the entry of cement into the state to stop spurious cement from being sent to Mizoram.

The executive order has informed all checkgates of different departments located in Vairengte to enforce the blockade while NGOs, also a member of the QCCC, had informed all its branches on the border areas with the neighbouring states to ensure that no cement slips through the gates.

The committee, on immediate investigation, also termed as exorbitantly high the price of cement in Mizoram compared to that in the neighbouring states.

Citing an example, the committee informed that the cost of a branded cement in Mizoram was Rs 320 per bag while it was sold at Rs 260 in Assam and Manipur.

Lankan refugee influx continues

Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, May 22 : The heavy influx of refugees into Tamil Nadu continued today with 80 refugees arriving in this coastal town in the wake of heightened tension in Sri Lanka due to clashes between LTTE and the military.With this, a total of 1,460 refugees have arrived here from Sri Lanka during the last 90 days, official sources said.The 80 refugees, comprising 21 families, came in five Lankan boats from Trincomalee area.While three boats landed.....

Home Ministry urged to help Manipur rape victims

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) CPI-M MP Brinda Karat today demanded the Home Ministry's intervention to ensure that the rape victims from Manipur, staying in camps in Mizoram now, were not pressurised to move back to mined and unsafe villages. Raising in the Rajya Sabha the issue of Hamar tribal women, including five minor girls, allegedly raped by militants belonging to the UNLF and KCP four months ago, Ms Karat said after the matter reached.....
