Girls outshine boys in Plus Two exams in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, May 22 (UNI) Girls have outshone boys in the Plus Two Tamil Nadu Board Examinations, the results of which were declared this morning.

While 77.1 per cent of the over 2.70 lakh girls cleared the examinations, only 71.7 per cent of the over 2.52 lakh boys passed this time.

The overall pass percentage among the over 5.76 lakh candidates, who appeared for the examinations, showed over two per cent decline to 74.5 per cent as against 76.9 per cent in 2005. Over 5.72 lakh candidates had appeared for the examinations last year.

The girls put up a better show registering a pass percentage of 77.1 per cent as against 79.3 per cent last year. Over 2.70 lakh girls appeared for this year's examinations as against 2.60 lakh last year.

71.7 per cent boys passed this year as against 74.1 per cent last year.

The number of boys writing the examination almost remained the same at over 2.52 lakh for 2005 and 2006.

An interesting aspect of the results is the firt two ranks have gone to girls while the honours for the third place have been shared by a boy and a girl.

N Kavya of the Chennai-based Sri Ahobila Mutt Oriental Higher Secondary School has emerged the topper securing 1,186 marks followed by S Nagalakshmi of SBOA School at Coimbatore with 1,185 marks.

The third place has been shared by N Janani of T V S Higher Secondary School at Madurai and S Shriram of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School at Namakkal, with both scoring 1,184 marks.

Montenegrin leader claims independence victory

PODGORICA, Serbia and Montenegro, May 22 (Reuters) Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic claimed victory for his independence drive in a referendum Yesterday to dissolve the country's union with Serbia. ''Tonight, with the majority decision by the citizens of Montenegro, the independence of the country has been renewed,'' he told supporters cheering the climax of his decade-long campaign to restore the independence Montenegro last enjoyed in 1918. US-led forces strike Taliban, up to 50 dead

KABUL, May 22 (Reuters) Aircraft from a US-led force in Afghanistan attacked Taliban strongholds today and may have killed up to 50 of the insurgents, a military spokesman said. Residents of the area said up to 35 civilians were killed. The attack was launched in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province where heavy fighting erupted last week between Taliban and Afghan and foreign troops. ''There was a coalition air strike ... as part of a coordinated operation.....

Bengal receives 3.23 pc of total FDI in India in '05

Kolkata, May 22 : West Bengal received 3.23 per cent of the total foreign direct investment received by India in 2005 as compared to 1.32 per cent of the total FDI investment received by the country in 2004, according to the quaterly bulletin on investments, industry and trade compiled by the state directorate of Industries.The state received nine FDI approvals entailing an investment of Rs 254.88crore in 2005 as compared to 36 FDI approvals involving Rs 115.41 crore investment in 2004,.....
