First target of 10,000 villages met under RGGVY in 2005-06

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) A total of 10,169 rural villages in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal and Karnataka have been electrified by the Rural Electrification Corporation under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) during 2005-06, REC Chairman cum Managing Director A K Lakhina today said.

The next target before the REC is to provide village infrastructure development in 40,000 villages during 2006-07, under the scheme for 100 per cent rural electrification in states lagging on the power front.

Earlier, Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde launched the National Programme of franchisees under the RGGVY, who will manage rural distribution of power.

Franchisees, who form the key component of the success of the scheme, include Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), users association, cooperatives or individual associations.

Russia, EU to sign relaxed visa, readmission agreements on May 25

Moscow, May 22 (UNI) Moscow will sign two agreements on a relaxed visa and readmission regime at the Russia-EU summit in the Black Sea resort of Sochi on May 25. ''Concerning agreements on a relaxed visa regime and readmission, we are preparing them for signing,'' Russian Ambassador to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov told Interfax news agency today. Mr Chizov said much-expected visa regulations will be simplified for individual categories of citizens, including students, researchers,.....

CPM says OBC quota necessary, but not for creamy layer

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The CPI(M) today said it had apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has begun holding discussions with political parties on the contentious reservation issue, of its view that the Left stood for quotas for the OBCs, but the benefits should not go to the creamy layer. CPI(M) senior leader and Party Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, Rup Chand Pal, while talking to UNI, said reservation must not affect the prospects.....
