CPI(M) flays DU VC's alleged statement on seat increase

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) Delhi unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) today condemned Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental for allegedly ruling out the possibility of increasing seats in the varsity for at least the next three years.

The VC's statement reflected the latest tactical posturing of anti-reservationists in the face of the centre's proposal to increase seats in institutes of higher education to protect the interest of general category students while implementing 27 per cent reservation for OBCs, CPI(M) Secretary P M S Grewal said in a statement.

It also represented obfuscation of facts regarding the potential of increasing seats in Delhi University, it added.

SIMI likely to be banned; UP against central move

Lucknow, May 22 (UNI) Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) is set to be banned shortly with the Centre issuing a show cause notice to the organisation. However, the Uttar Pradesh government today clarified it would not support the centre's move. IIM-B not for increase in admissions

Bangalore, May 22 (UNI) The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B), has ruled out enhancing the student strength beyond the planned intake for the next academic year. IIM-B Director Prakash G Apte told UNI that the Institute had already approved to increase the strength to 300 from the current level of 260. ''It's a planned increase...beyond this it will be difficult.'' He said though physical infrastructure was not a problem, the Institute was facing shortage.....

Monitoring mechanism sought to control price rise

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) On the prevailing price situation in the country, Congress leader V Narayanasamy today demanded that with an aim to control the prices of essential commodities a monitoring mechanism should be in place. Initiating the short duration discussion on rise in prices of essential commodities in the country, Mr Narayanasamy said there is a dire need of strengthening the public distribution system and more items should be added to the list.....
