Britain PM Blair visits Iraq to meet new govt

Baghdad, May 22: British Prime Minister Tony Blair landed in Baghdad today to show support for Iraq's new government and discuss troops, as officials said they expected all foreign forces engaged in combat to leave within four years.

The national unity government -- finalised on Saturday after months of wrangling -- will accelerate the handover of security control from U.S.-led forces to Iraqis and allow London to bring some troops home by mid-year, a senior British official said.

Life returns to normal in Kashmir after yesterdays fidayeen attack

Srinagar, May 22 (UNI) Life returned to normal after yesterday's general strike and fidayeen attack on a Congress rally in which seven people were killed and scores injured. The general strike call was given by the Hurriyat Conference (Omar) on the 16th death anniversay of Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq and 4th anniversary of late Abdul Gani Lone. Both the leaders were killed by unidentified gunmen. Shops and business establishments reopened this morning and transport was plying.....

MK plea to PM on quota in educational institutions

Chennai, May 22 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to promulgate an ordinance for implementing 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher educational institutions. Guwahati, May 22 (UNI) There are three women legislators in the newly-elected 12th Asom Assembly for whom politics happens to be a career by accident and not by choice. Congress MLAs Mrs Jonjonali Baruah, social welfare minister Mrs Ajanta Neog and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator, Mrs Alaka Desai Sharma probably wouldn't have been in the Assam Assembly if insurgents had not killed politician husbands.
