Army celebrates Teethwal day

Srinagar, May 22 (UNI) The Army today celebrated the Teethwal day to commemorate the liberation of Teethwal in Karnah area of Jammu and Kashmir on May 22, 1948.

A defence spokesman said the celebration this year spanned over two weeks in which a host of sporting and social events were organised.

Medical, veterinary and pulse polio camps, recruitment rally, harmony run, cricket and volley ball tournaments besides cultural competitions were held to mark the day, he added.

He said the ceremony, organised by Chamkot Battalions, began with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Commander of the Tangdhar Brigade and singing of the National Anthem.

The games, cultural events and the motorcycle display by the 'Tornadoes Team' enthralled the audience. Prizes and gifts were later distributed among the children.

''The day espouses strong emotions and bears testimony to the resident bond between the Army and the brave people of Tangdhar bowl. The celebration is not a mere social event, but an assertion of the people's resolve to combat such threats to our national integrity,'' the spokesman said.

11 security personnel among 22 injured in Srinagar blasts

India free to enact its law for its citizens, BJP tells Pope

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The BJP today snubbed Vatican Chief Pope Benedict XVI for his remark that banning conversion was unconstitutional and said India like Vatican was a sovereign nation and free to enact laws for its citizens in its geographical bounds. Separatists puncture round-table balloon yet again

Srinagar, May 22 (UNI) The separatists have once again rejected repeated pleas from various quarters to join the round-table conference called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek views from all shades of opinion at a common forum for resolving the contentious Kashmir issue. Prominent separatist groups such as both the hardline and moderate factions of the Hurriyat Conference, the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) have all declined.....
