AP Govt gives Group Insurance to toddy tappers

Hyderabad, May 22 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Government today issued orders introducing Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme for toddy tappers in the state.

The State Cabinet ratified the orders.

The salient features of the scheme were that the government would pay Rs two lakh to the legal heir of deceased toddy tappers and Rs 50,000 to the toddy tapper in case of permanent disability.

Likewise, Rs 10,000 would be paid to the toddy tapper in case of temporary disability.

Photo identity cards would be issued to active tappers and Rs 65 would be paid to the Insurance Company per tapper per annum by the government. The number of beneficiaries was 2.60 lakh and the financial commitment was Rs 1.69 crore per annum.

Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise was authorised to enter an agreement with the ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company. Sealed tenders were called for inviting insurance companies for selecting one of them to participate in the scheme.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited quoted the lowest premium of Rs 65 per tapper, according to official sources.

Roy asked to submit report on security arrangements at MLA hostels

Mumbai, May 22 (UNI) Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar and Council Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh today asked Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy to submit a report, within a week, on security arrangements at all the four MLA hostels here. This assumes significance in the wake of reports that the four alleged terrorists arrested from Aurangabad recently had stayed at an MLA hostel near the State Secretariat early this month. Gujarat to have new policy on women's empowerment

Gandhinagar, May 22 (UNI) The Gujarat Government today decided to formulate a new policy for women's empowerment and children's development. The decision was taken by Chief Minister Narendra Modi after reviewing the draft with a high-level committee, official sources said here today. Mr Modi announced that suggestions made by the committee would be incorporated in the new policy and would be placed before the State Cabinet for approval. The meeting was attended by Gujarat Women Welfare Minister.....

Pak hopes 'ice will melt' on Siachen

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) Pakistan today hoped that the warmth of growing ties with India would melt the snows of conflict on Siachen. The two countries will hold two-day talks here tomorrow and on May 24 on a proposal to withdraw troops from Siachen glacier in Jammu and Kashmir. This will be followed by discussions on May 25-26 on the demarcation of Sir Creek, a strip of marshland on the western border between the two.....
