Marcos, ever-present when Brazil won the 2002 World Cup, is recovering from a thigh muscle injury which has kept him out of action with Palmeiras for three months.
''Of course, I was hopeful but (coach Carlos Alberto) Parreira was fair,'' he told the Estado News Agency. ''All 23 players were picked on merit.'' Marcos said he watched as Parreira, who named the players in alphabetical order, announced his squad live on television yesterday.
''It was Kaka, then Lucio, then Luisao and then it jumped to Ricardinho. I thought, that's it, I'm out,'' he said.
''If I'd be playing, I'd be upset. But I knew I had only a small chance.'' Parreira chose Dida, Julio Cesar and Rogerio Ceni as his three goalkeepers.
