BJP state unit president and former assembly speaker Kesharinath Tripathi raised the issue through a supplementary. He sought details on reports of an increase in the number of madrasas in UP and their alleged ''use by terrorists to carry out their designs.'' In his reply state parliamentary affairs minister Mohd Azam Khan said the previous governments had carried out a probe into the issue but no proof of their involvement in terror acts was established. He said not only madrasas, but any organisation supporting terrorists should be probed.
Joining in, Congress MLAs reminded the house of the important role madarsas had played during the freedom struggle. The Congress also wondered how a party which had demolished the Babri Mosque -- ''an act of mass terrorism'' -- could talk of madrasas being used by terrorists.
To this, an agitated Hukum Singh of BJP said after the command of a national party had been handed over to ''a foreigner'' it had stopped looking at the internal security issues.
Agitated Congress members rushed to the well of the house, followed by BJP members. This led to noisy exchange between members of various parties after which BJP staged a walkout for not getting a satisfactory reply to the supplementary.
