Centre to set up District Planning Commission: Aiyer

Hyderabad, May 14 (UNI) Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyer today announced that the proposed 'District Planning Commissions' system would be implemented from next year in the country.

Speaking at a plenary session, organised on the occasion of the completion of two year Congress regime in the State, Mr Aiyer said the district planning commissions as indicated in the '11th Plan', scheduled to be implemented next year, would empower the Panchyats, Mandal Parishads and Zilla Parishads and make them 'self-reliant'.

Stating that the Planning Commission had asked the State Governments to send the district plans prepared by the respective people's representatives, he said the Government would prepare plans and budget allocation, based on the guidelines of the district planning commission.

The commission would empower the local bodies as per the 73rd amendment that provided powers to the panchayati Raj institutions, he added.
