Neck and neck race likely in TN assembly polls

Coimbatore, May 1 (UNI) Two former Union Ministers will have a tough tussle in a triangular contest in the Thondamuthur Assembly constituency.

Though initially the fight was only between MDMK treasurer M Kannappan and sitting Congress MLA S R Balasubramanian, BJP candidate and former MLA M Chinnaraj has joined the race.

There are 16 candidates from four recognised parties. Four registered parties and eight Independant candidates had filed their nomination papers.

Mr Kannappan was the Union Minister of State for Non- Convenational Energy in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government from 1999 to 2004.

After winning from Thiruchengodu Lok Sabha seat, he had also won the assembly seat and became Tamil Nadu Minister during the DMK regime. He won from Kinathukadvu in 1967 and 1971 and Palladam in 1989. He lost from Singanallur in 1996 and won the Lok Sabha seat from Tiruchengodu in 1999.

Mr Balasubramanian became the Union Minister of State for Personnel, Pension and Public Grievances in the United Front Government. He won the Nilgiris Lok Sabha seat in 1996 on Tamil Manila Congress ticket. He also served as Opposition leader in the Tamil Nadu assembly from 1991 to 1996.

Mr Balasubramnian is contesting the coming election on Congress ticket. He won the seat in 2001, defeating DMK candidate V R Sukanya with a margin of 28,536 votes.

The MDMK fought the election alone and their candidate Krishnasamy secured 17,298 votes in the election. The alliance led by AIADMK, including TMC, Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Part of India (Marxist), had won the 2001 elections comfortably.

Unprecedented security for May 3 assembly polls

Kannur, May 1 (UNI) Massive security arrangements are in place in the politically volatile Kannur and Kasargod districts in Kerala going to assembly polls in the third phase on May three following alleged electoral malpratices. Altogether 9000 security personnel drawn from Kerala, Karnataka Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu police forces have been deployed in Kannur, where all the polling booths were declared as sensitive, Superintendent of Police Mathew Polycarp, overseeing security arrangements.....

Akbar Khan objects to Naqvi's comments on Feroz controversy

Mumbai, May 1 (UNI) Filmmaker Akbar Khan has described the comments of BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, terming his actor brother Feroz Khan as the only nationalist in the film industry delegation touring Pakistan as a ''cheap political intervention''. Talking to UNI over telephone from Karachi, Mr Khan said Mr Naqvi should have cross checked his facts before making an unneccessary comment out of ulterior motives. Modi flags off Save Girl Child rally

Porbandar, Gujarat, May 1 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today appealed to the people to undertake an oath not to commit the 'sin' of sex selection and female foeticide. Before flagging off 'Beti Bachao' (save the girl child ) rally on the occasion of 47th Gujarat Gaurav Divas, Mr Modi resolved to wipe out the evil from the society. Seeking people's cooperation in fighting pre-determination of sex and female foeticide, he urged the people.....
