Modi flags off Save Girl Child rally

Porbandar, Gujarat, May 1 (UNI) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today appealed to the people to undertake an oath not to commit the 'sin' of sex selection and female foeticide.

Before flagging off 'Beti Bachao' (save the girl child ) rally on the occasion of 47th Gujarat Gaurav Divas, Mr Modi resolved to wipe out the evil from the society. Seeking people's cooperation in fighting pre-determination of sex and female foeticide, he urged the people to write him a postcard about the sin whenever they came across it and promised to act on it.

Mr Modi warned educated people and a section of the medical community against misusing the technology of pre-natal sex determination.

He underlined the need to educate people and to encourage them to stop the sinful practice of female foeticide by sensitising them that it is the gross violation of human rights.

Competent officials are authorised to take punitive action against those carrying out female foeticide, he added.

Earlier, the Chief Minister visited the Kirit Mandir, the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi and paid homage.
