Forest clearance for Polavaram in 3 months: Minister

Anaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, May 1 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Major and Medium Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah today expressed confidence that forest clearance for the Polavaram Project would be obtained in three months.

Addressing presspersons, Mr Laxmaiah said work on the project had been only temporarly suspended. He claimed all the states in the country were taking "Jalayagnam" as a role model for providing water to farmers.

The Minister said agreement with the contractors would be extended for the period of work suspension and adjustments made accordingly.

Earlier, Mr Laxmaiah declared open the bridge built across Samalkot Canal at a cost of Rs one crore.

UGC sanctions Rs 17 lakh for research project

Tirupati, May 1(UNI) University Grant Commission(UGC) has sanctioned Rs 17 lakh to Oriental Research Institute(ORI) of Sri Venkateswara Univeristy(SVU) for research project on Ramayana and devotional literature, here. ORI sources said the first project was sanctioned to M Prabhakar Rao for comparative study of Ramayana written in four Dravidian languages with a grant of Rs 8.27 lakh. The second research project has been awarded to C Govindaraju for comparative study of Vaishnava Bakthi Sahithyam(devotional literature).....

Derailment forces SR to cancel trains

Chennai, May 1 (UNI) The Southern Railway (SR) today announced the cancellation of eight trains following the derailment of nine wagons of a goods train at Chitheri on the Arakkonam-Katpadi section late last night. A Railway release here said the single line was restored this morning and all incoming trains coming via Jolarpet and Katpadi, expected to reach Chennai Central this morning, will arrive this afternoon. Except for some trains, all other trains would leave Chennai.....

Woman claims to be Suryanaryana's second wife seeks assistance

Hyderabad, May 1 (UNI) A woman claiming to be the second wife of K Suryanarayana, who was executed by Taliban in Afghanistan, today urged the government to provide assistance to her and her eight-month baby girl Nitisha. Speaking to newpersons here, Ms Swapna said she got married to Suryanarayana about four years ago and he was the sole bread winner for the family. She neither had financial support from her parents nor any assets to support.....
