Centre asks Gujarat to control Vadodara situation

New Delhi, May 1: The Centre today directed the Gujarat government to take steps to bring the communal situation under control in Vadodara district of the state.

Home Secretary V K Duggal spoke to Gujarat chief secretary G Suba Rao and other officials to seek details of the incident.

The Centre has asked the Gujarat government to keep paramilitary forces on alert and take all the necessary steps to control the situation, official sources said here.

They said the Centre is constantly monitoring the situation in the state.

In Vadodara, two people have reportedly died and 20 others injured in the violent clashes between local residents and police after the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) demolished a 'dargah' in the Fatehpura area.

Curfew has been imposed in the walled city area following these clashes.

The protestors were opposing the VMC's move to demolish the 100-year-old 'dargah' in Fatehpura police station area, that was encroaching the road near the historic Champaner Gate. They indulged in stone pelting when the VMC squad and police parties came to execute the demolition.

Police opened six rounds of fire and lobbed more than 100 teargas shells to quell the violence. Though the 'dargah' was razed by the VMC officials, another 'dargah' in the area could not be removed as tension gripped the city.
