PMC promises special category status

Pondicherry, Apr 30(UNI)The Puducherry Munnetra Congress(PMC)today promised to obtain special category state status for Pondicherry if voted to power.

In its election manifesto released here this evening by party President P.Kannan, the party promised to announce date for local body elections within one month and reconsideration in the implementation of value added tax and alternate arrangements for traders who were affected by the uniform floor rate of sales tax to boost trade activites in the union territory.

The party also promised to introduce Goondas Act to eliminate the menace of goons and rowdies indulging in land and house grabbing here and supply of an LPG cylinder at half price to those having an income of less than Rs 7,500 per month.The party also promised to introduce a novel pilgrimage scheme for senior citizens for which the expenses will be borne by the government.

Generation of employment oppertunities and provision of unemployment dole to educated unemployed youths,introduction of the mono rail scheme,waiver of all agricultural loans,setting up of a Tamil university, planetorium, strengthening primary ducation,setting up of an art gallery of international standard,health insurance for all citizens, medical assistance of Rs.500 per month to freedom fighters, setting up of a public service commission here, maintaining status-quo of Jipmer, setting up of an engineering college in Karaikal region are among the promises the party has made in the manifesto.

Ex-US envoy to India Galbraith dies

New York, Apr 30 (UNI) Former American ambassador to India John Kenneth Galbraith died yesterday in Massachusetts. He passed away at a hospital in Cambridge, the New York Times reported today. He was 97. A Canada-born naturalised American, an influential economist and author of ''The Affluent Society'', Mr Galbraith was an emeritus professor at Harvard University. A close friend and a strong supporter of President John F Kennedy, Galbraith held the post.....

Acute shortage of medical professionals in Australia

Sydney, Apr 30 (UNI) In spite of influx of general practitioners from countries like Britain, India and Pakistan, shortage of medical professionals in Australia is not showing any signs of improving in the near future, sources said. The Australian policymakers have been struggling for years to cope with a dearth of medical practitioners like GPs and nurses. Ageing medical force has made the matters even worse, they said. Visakha one elected member sworn-in as MLA

Hyderabad, Apr 30 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker KR Suresh Reddy today administered oath of office as MLA to the Visakhapatnam one Assembly elected member Dr Dronam Raju Srinivas, who was elected for the assembly seat in the by-poll held on April 24. Mr Srinivas, son of late Drinam Raju Satyanarayan, MLA who died due to prolonged illness in December, contested for Congress party and retained the seat by defeating the Telugu Desam Party candidate......
