Integrated Project for Self-sufficiency in Animal Origin Food in NE

Aizawl, Apr 30 (UNI) North Eastern Council (NEC) has proposed to introduce a project called Integrated project for self-sufficiency in animal origin food in NE region.

The scheme aims to tackle the main hurdles coming in the way of development of animal husbandry in the region, such as organising producers, timely provision of quality inputs and marketing cover, the official sources here today informed.

The NEC has conducted a survey, which indicates that the NER imports food of animal origin of the value of Rs 1000 crores annually, consisting mostly of poultry, piggery and meat.

The project would set up base farm for direct funding to individuals and various registered Societies across all the NE states.

Further, the Base Farm could be entrusted to the State Governments and direct funding to unemployed youths and selected societies will be based on a model viable scheme.

The modified scheme will include piggery etc, but it will not duplicate the State Govt. schemes and whatever implemented by NEC.

Under this scheme, NEC has already provided assistance to about 16 Registered Societies and Associations, which includes two in Arunachal Pradesh, two in Assam, two Meghalaya, five in Nagaland and five in Mizoram.

Currently, the proposal for setting up of base farms for different species like Pig, Poultry, Duck and Rabbit have been prepared and the Planning Commission have given in principle approval to the Base Farm schemes. These Base Farm schemes will be implemented either by the State Governments or Apex Co-Operative Organisations, the official sources added.
