Egypt government seeks two years of emergency law

CAIRO, Apr 30 (Reuters) The Egyptian government has sent parliament a formal request that it extend emergency law for another two years or until the government prepares a new anti-terrorism law, the speaker of parliament said today.

''The Prime Minister (Ahmed Nazif) has informed me of the president's (Hosni Mubarak's) decision to extend the state of emergency,'' speaker Fathi Sorour told the house. He said he was sending the request to a committee for preliminary review.

Libya's Gaddafi meets Palestinian foreign minister

TRIPOLI, Apr 30 (Reuters) Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi held talks with Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud al-Zahar, who is touring Arab states to raise funds for his cash-strapped Hamas-led government, state news agency Jana reported. ''The Palestinian minister briefed the brother leader (Gaddafi) about the developments of the Palestinian situation,'' Jana said late yesterday. Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Abdel-Rahman Shalgam also attended Saturday's meeting, it added. Jana gave no further details about Zahar's stay in Libya......

Candidate's murder will not affect poll process: CRO

Karur, Apr 29 (UNI) The poll process in Krishnarayapuram Assembly constituency in Karur district, where Tamil Nadu Jananayaka Congress (TNJC) candidate P Ponnusamy was murdered, will not be affected, Chief Returning Officer and District Collector A Karthik said today. Talking to UNI, he said Ponnusamy filed nomination papers as TNJC candidate. During scrutiny, it was found that TNJC was a registered political party but not recognised by the Election Commission. China mine blast kills 24, eight missing

BEIJING, Apr 30 (Reuters) Twenty-four miners were confirmed dead and eight were missing after an explosion tore through a coal mine in northwest China's Shaanxi province, the official Xinhua News Agency reported today. The blast shook the Wayaobao Coal Mine in Yan'an yesterday after a gas build-up in the mine ignited, Xinhua said. Second phase poll peaceful, 70 per cent polling

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 29 (UNI) Barring a few minor incidents, the second phase of Kerala Assembly passed off peacefully today with 70 per cent of voters exercising their franchise to elect 66 members from six central and northern districts of the state to the 140-member House.
