Two AIADMK workers sustain burn injuries

Villuppuram, Tamil Nadu, Apr 29 (UNI) Two AIADMK workers sustained burns when they came into contact with a high tension live wire while removing a tall banner put up to mark the opening of a party camp office by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Suprem J Jayalalithaa here today.

The victims were identified as Babu, 50, who had sustained 70 per cent burns, and Murugan, 40, who suffered 30 to 40 per cent burns, and also fractured his hand.

After Ms Jayalalithaa left the venue, the workers climbed atop a wooden scaffolding to remove the festoons and banners. Suddenly one of the banners collapsed and hit the hightension wire, leading to the mishap.

While Babu was admitted to Pondicherry Government Hospital, the other person was taken to Villuppuram General Hospital for treatment.

BJP leader predicts mid-term poll

Pondicherry, Apr 29(UNI) BJP leader and former Union Minister S Thirunavukkarasar today predicted a mid-term poll to the Parliament following which the BJP would capture power. Undertaking electioneering in ten constituencies here, Mr Thirunavukkarasar said the days of the Manmohan Singh Government are being counted, since the Left would withdraw support at any time. Australia increases migrant intake

Sydney, May 1 (UNI) Austarlian Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone today announced an increase in Canberra's migrant intake by a further 1,000 in the next financial year, following a rise in the demand for spouse visas. The Minister announced that while Australia's 2006-07 intake of skilled migrants would remain at 97,500, the government would increase the intake of migrants for family reasons to 46,000, said Sydney Morning Herald.
