State govts asked to enhance grants to education

Mangalore, Apr 29 (UNI) Former Chief Justice of India and National Human Rights Commission A S Anand today said eight per cent of the GDP should be set aside for the field of education.

Speaking after presenting the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Foundation Award to former Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee, he lamented the grants sanctioned by state governments for the field was not sufficient. Though the Government assured to enhance the grants, it still remained at five per cent of the GDP. The minimum requirement of grant to the field is eight per cent of the GDP, he added.

Talking about the visionary zeal of late Former Supreme Court Justice K S Hegde, Dr Anand said soon after retiring as Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr Hegde had returned to his native place to serve poor students.

He also commended the services rendered by the Foundation for the welfare of orphaned rural children.

Defence Ministry praises Bihar government on SAP : Nitish

Two die while crossing rail track

Durgapur, Apr 30 (UNI) Two persons died on the spot and three were critcally injured while crossing a railway track at Mayabazar rail gate here today.
