Sonia slams CPI(M)'s role in implementing Centre's projects

Kaliagunj, Apr 29 (UNI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi lashed out at the West Bengal government, saying she was not satisfied with the state government's role in implementing Centre's projects.

Speaking at the interior village of Kaliagunj under North Dinajpur district to campaign for the Assembly elections in Bengal yesterday, Mrs Gandhi said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is concerned about the problems of North Bengal but the state government was not playing any active role to find a solution.

Mrs Gandhi said the UPA government was worried over tea garden workers, who were starving.

She said the Central government had planned to pass a bill for the uplift of tribal women belonging to the tea gardens in North Bengal.

Criticising the CPI(M), she said the party had been ruling the state since 1976 but did not do anything for the development of the poor villagers, adding some villages of West Bengal still did not have electricity, drinking water and proper communication.

She promised that all villages would get electricity within three years.

Campaigning for INC candidate Prof Pramath Nath Roy, contesting for the Kaliagunj constituency, she exhorted the people to vote for the Congress for the development of the state.
