Nirupam faces stiff challenge from Trinamool

Burdwan, Apr 29 (UNI) The high-profile Burdwan (South) constituency is going to witness a battle of attrition between Industry Minister and CPI(M) candidate Nirupam Sen and six-time winning Trinamool Congress Councillor Samir Roy in the fourth phase of assembly elections in West Bengal on May 3.

Mr Sen had won from this constituency in the last assembly elections by over a margin of more than 24,000 votes against his Trinamool Congress rival.

Third contestent from this constituency, Rathin Mallick of the Congress, is facing severe squabbling within his own party.

Thus, the main contest will take place between Mr Sen and Mr Roy.

Both the candidates have spared no efforts and fanned out to the nook and cranny of this constituency to woo the electorate and garner their support.

A lawyer by profession, Mr Roy is according much importance to street corner meetings and door-to-door campaigning.

On the other hand, because of being a heavyweight leader, Mr Sen is in great demand throughout the district. Hence in spite of not being able to spend much time in his own constituency, the other party cadres are making up for it.

Their election campaign too is of the same type. But in every field their number of workers is much more than of Trinamool Congress'. Yet Mr Roy is not losing heart as he is highlighting the loopholes and failures of the Left Front government and assuring the people of providing better basic amenities.

He said, '' These leaders make promises before the election, but once the election is over, they disappear from the scene. '' The local people said, '' Though the Industry Minister is from this constituency, no industry has come up here in the past five years. The state government has turned a blind eye to this constituency. '' On the other hand, sitting CPI(M) MLA and Industry Minister Mr Sen is confident of winning the election. The Left Front had kept the development spree going and the state was going ahead fast and this would make people vote for the party, Mr Sen opined.
