Guwahati, Apr 29 (UNI) As their counter-parts head abroad, students of North East are on their way to other parts of the country.
While students outflow from this region has led to questions being raised on the quality of education here, it also triggered discussion on what other factors motivate them to leave the state.
The Edufest, a two-day career counseling fest on the city which concluded yesterday, has once again drawn students from across the state and the region. Into its third year now, the fair has witnessed the participation of about 5,000 students in just two days.
Orgainser of the fest Kaushik Barua opines that students opt to go outside as it helps them in making career moves later in life.
Conceding that delay in declaration of results and comparatively out-dated syllabus has prompted more student outflow adding that other reasons also leads them to go outside.
''Students go out of the state to get the exposure. It helps them in making contacts and getting jobs. The job market here is almost saturated, hence they need to look for other options,'' Mr Barua said.
Preeti Das, a Class XII student who has just appeared for her final exams, said, ''Exposure to a new place, away from the shelter of parents, will help us in securing jobs in the future. We will not hesitate to take up work outside the state if we already get used to living on our own.'' Her mother agrees adding on a cautionary note, ''Parents must be aware of the educational institutes they send their wards to. We must not let our children study outside just for the sake of it.'' ''Till a few years ago, going for studies outside the state was a news in itself. Now, studying here raises questions,'' said another parent Subhas Dutta, who visited the fest with his son who is a Class XI student.
