Narayan Sewa Sansthan opens branch ashram in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Apr 29 (UNI) In order make disabled people self-reliant, the Narayan Sewa Sansthan, Udaipur, pioneer in polio operations, has opened a branch.

The Sansthan founded by Sadhu Kailash 'Manav' in 1985, has perfomed 51,000 successful operations on polio patients at its own hospital in Udaipur.

Prashant Agarwal, organising secretary, informed that nealy 9,000 patients to be operated are in the waiting list of 10 to 11 months.

Mr Agarwal said that a team of 10 doctors perform nealy 1,200 to 1,300 operations in a month and all the patients in the 400-bed hospital, with any number of attendents are provided free boarding, lodging and medicines free of cost.

He said no money is charged from any patient, who he or she may be. Everything is taken care through donations, he added.

On the other activities of the Sansthan, he said, an institution for deaf, dumb and mentally retarded children, an orphanage and free medical and education camps for tribal children, among other programmes running besides polio operations.

Mr Agarwal said after the surgery, under rehabilitation programme patients are provided vocational training to prepare them mentally and physically fit to earn livelihood, in addition to this marriages of handicapped persons are arranged.

Brij Lal Gangu, incharge branch ashram, said that there are nearly 70 to 80 lakh people gripped with polio in India and soon the Sansthan would arrange doctors, physiotherapists, clippers and other material needed by any disabled person here. The Sansthan operates 372 branches in India and 81 branches abroad, he added.

Brisk and peaceful polling in communally sensitive Marad

Kozhikode, Apr 29 (UNI) The electorate in communally sensitive Marad, where nine people were massacred by unidentified persons in May 2003, turned up in large numbers to vote, amid tight security.
