Eminent personalities felicitated by Hindu College Association

New Delhi, Apr 29 (UNI) Noted film maker and music director Vishal Bharadwaj, Mrs Suchitra Gupta, a well known figure in the field of art and culture, Dr (Pt) Gulzar Dehelvi, poet and scholar, were among a few personalities felicitated by The Old Students Association of the Hindu College here today.

The Association organised their annual 5th Alumni Awards to honour its distinguished pass-outs who have excelled in their professional careers in various fields such as politics, acedmics, sports, art, music, films, law and media.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee was the guest of honour and presented the awards to the distinguished personalties.

The first recipient of the Life Time Achievement Awardees was Dr Pt Gulzar Dehelvi, a noted poet and a vetern scholar.

Mr Prem Prakash, Member of British Empire in recognition for his contribution in developing the TV industry in India and UK also shared the honour.

Distinguished Alumni Award winners included personalties like Kapil Batra, who created a niche for himself in the TV industry with the programmes like Bournvita quiz, Indian idol etc.

Mrs Suchitra Gupta, an alumnus of the college, reader of the Dept of History and well known in the field of art and culture was the other recipient of the award.

Besides, Justice Mukul Mudgal, Judge-High Court, Mr Surinder Khanna-former cricketer, Mr PP Sawhney, a well known name in the hospitality industry, Mr Vishal Bharadwaj-Director films and music included the recipients. Dr Kavita A Sharma-principal, Hindu College too was honoured. In the field of acedemics Prof Amba Prasad was felicitated posthumously.

Elaborating on the role of Hindu alumnis in the nation's development he said that the college passouts have always been instrumental in all kinds of service to the nation. Right from the freedom struggle to fighting for social cause the alumnis have always striven for excellence.

Kuldip Nayar calls for new press commission

New Delhi, Apr 29 (UNI) Veteran journalist and former Parliamentarian Kuldip Nayar today called for establishment of a media commission to look into the state of affairs in both print and electronic media. Delivering a keynote address on the occassion of 57th Foundation Day of the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), he said the last press commission was appointed 29 years ago. Fire at Connaught Place hotel, no one injured

New Delhi, Apr 29 (UNI) A minor fire today broke out at Hotel Hamilton Court in Connaught Place area here. Fire Brigade sources said the fire was brought under control within half-an-hour. No one was injured. The fire broke out in the hotel's air conditioning plant at about 1130 hrs. Three fire tenders doused the blaze by 1200 hrs. UNI AN LS PC2209.....

Mother, son run over by train

Purulia (West Bengal), Apr 29 (UNI) A woman and her son were run over by Kharagpur bound Hatia-Kharagpur passenger train at an unmanned level crossing near Jhalda in Purulia district. The incident occurred about 50 kms from Purulia town, South Eastern Railways station manager in Purulia S Majumdar said yesterday. Another boy of the same family was also seriously injured and admitted to Purulia Sadar Hospital, police said. UNI XC TJP AD RK0422.....
