EC examining BJP complaint on Rae Bareli polls

New Delhi, Apr 29 (UNI) The Election Commission has received a complaint from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that Congress leaders in Punjab are giving cash to people to vote during May 8 by-polls in Rae Bareli in which Congress president Sonia Gandhi is the candidate.

Deputy election commissioner R. Bhattacharya said the EC is examining the complaint.

Congress MP from Amethi Rahul Gandhi is leading the election campaign for his mother, Ms Gandhi, whose resignation from the same Lok Sabha seat in a dramatic political move last month necessitated the by-polls.

Ms Gandhi quit the seat after opposition leaders charged her with violating the law by heading the National Advisory Council while being a member of Parliament.

But she had vowed to contest by-elections from her rural Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which has been represented in Parliament by several generations of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
