DG of Forest and Environment express satisfaction

Agartala, Apr 29 (UNI) The Director General (DG) and Additional Director General (ADG) of Forest and Environment have expressed satisfaction over Tripura's progress in afforestation.

During a meeting with Chief Minister Manik Sarkar here yesterday, both the Central government officials - Environment and Forest Ministry Special Secretary and DG J C Kala and and ADG G K Prasad expressed their satisfaction.

The Chief Minister requested the DG to open a "Special Cell" under the Environment and Forest department of the Union government keeping in view the forest wealth-based economy of the North-Eastern region. Mr Sarkar also requested the Union Government through the DG to open an "Advance Training Centre for Bamboo and Cane" in the region for the development of handicrafts industries. During the meeting, Chief Secretary R K Mathur, Rural Development Minister Jitendra Chowdhury were present.

Mr Kala and Mr Prasad called on Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahaya at Raj Bhawan yesterday and apprised him of the plan and activities of the Central Ministry of Forests in developing the state's forest.

Meanwhile, a team of Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC), which also arrived here on Thursday, called on the State forest department officials and discussed the proposed Rs 300 crore project titled "Special Assistance for Project Formulation of Tripura Forest Environment and Poverty Alleviation Programme", placed before the JBIC by the Tripura Government a few months back.

The team came here to make an on the spot study of various aspects on forest environment and poverty alleviation.
