Vijayakanth gets drum symbol

Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, Apr 24 (UNI) Actor-turned politician Vijayakanth, who is testing the political waters from Vridhachalam, has been allotted the drum symbol to contest the May 8 Assembly elections.

A total of 14 candidates are left in the fray in the constituency after deadline for withdrawal of candidature ended at 1500 hrs today.

The process of allotment of free symbols to independents and registered parties was also completed.

While the actor was allotted the drum symbol, three independent candidates with the name 'Vijaykanth' had been allotted 'banana,' 'television' and 'ring' symbols.

Though the actor wanted a uniform symbol for all candidates of his party 'Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam' (DMDK) state Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta had earlier indicated that it was not possible.

The DMDK is contesting in all 234 constituencies on its own.

Lalu income tax evasion case: SC wants some other judge

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) The Supreme Court today indicated that it was inclined to request the Patna High Court Chief Justice to decide within 15 days about the judge to hear the income tax evasion case pending against Railway Minister Lalu Prasad. A bench comprising Mr Justice K G Balakrishanan, Mr Justice A R Lakshmanan and Mr Justice S H Kapadia while adjourning the hearing of the case till May 5 made its mind.....

Scores of people rendered homeless in Dhapa landslide

Kolkata, Apr 24 (UNI) Scores of people were rendered homless at Dhapa on the E M Bypass on the outskirts of the city after landslides damaged many houses and roads since yesterday. The city's solid waste is dumped in Dhapa. Local people complained that landslides, triggered by excessive dumping of garbage, led to drying up of a pond. It also damaged many houses forcing the occupants to desert the place. However, no specific reason was known.....
