Trial against Telgi, associates to begin from April 28

Mumbai, Apr 24: The trial in a murder case involving Abdul Karim Telgi, the kingpin in the fake stamp paper scam, and three others will begin in the court of Additional Sessions Judge U D Salvi here on April 28.

Telgi, his nephew Tabrez and associates Uday Sawant and Sajid Khan have been charged with the murder of the scamster's former driver Christopher Bhatti in 2001.

Summons have already been issued to the witnesses to give their evidence.

According to the prosecution, Bhatti, who used to handle Telgi's fake stamp paper business in Tamil Nadu, had allegedly stolen Rs 2.5 lakh and gone into hiding, but Telgi's associates went to Tamil Nadu and brought him to Mumbai.

Bhatti was allegedly brutally beaten up following which he succumbed to his injuries, according to an FIR registered by police on August 7, 2001, following which Telgi and his associates were arrested.

The charges against the accused were framed on March 24.

AMU Vice Chancellor welcomes SC ruling

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor Naseem Ahmed today welcomed the Supreme Court ruling maintaining the minority status of the institution in accordance with the 1981 constitutional amendment. Mr Ahmed said the ruling has restored the character of AMU as it was prior to the litigation at the Allahabad High Court. The AMU Students' Union also welcomed the ruling, saying the judiciary was the only institution which could establish true.....

India assures Algeria of suppoprt to its President's Nobel bid

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) India today assured Algeria that its request for support for nomination of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize would receive the ''highest consideration.'' The assurance was given by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to Algerian Ambassador in New Delhi Dr Noureddine Bardad-Daidj who called on him (Mr Chatterjee) here. The request was contained in a letter from Algerian National Assembly President Amar Saadani which the Ambassador.....

Centre takes up Orissa's complaint against AP on Vamsadhara

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) The Centre today asked the Andhra Pradesh Government for details of the latest status of the Vamsadhara irrigation project Phase 11, being executed by the state in the face of strong objection by the Orissa government. The Central directive came at a high-level meeting between officials of the two states presided over by the Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources.
