Tension palpable in Nepal on eve of crucial SPA rally

Kathmandu, Apr 24 (UNI) Skirmishes between baton-wielding security personnel and pro-democracy protestors continued unabated in different parts of Nepal, ahead of the crucial seven-party alliance rally here tomorrow, amid apprehensions of a major showdown in the struggle for the ceding of full power to the people and franctic diplomatic bids to resolve the imbroglio.

Reports received here said over 15 people were injured when police baton charged and fired teargas shells to disperse the protestors near Narayan Gopal Chowk.

However, the security forces are also gearing up. Reports said helicopters of the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) were being used for aerial surveillance of crowds and direct ground troops. Meanwhile, a report in the Kathmandu Post said Inspector General of Police Shyam Bhakta Thapa had given direct orders to all commanders not to allow protestors to assemble and if necessary, open fire.

Twenty-two-year-old Abhishek was arrested from the Seemapuri area of East Delhi yesterday while he was riding a motorcycle he had stolen from the Gokulpuri area. Interrogation of the accused revealed that he was a member of a gang involved in committing several dacoities in Haryana. Abhishek was wanted in two cases of dacoity.....

Airport privatisation: Reliance files SLP in Supreme Court

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) Reliance ASA Consortium today filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court against the Delhi high court judgment dated April 21 dismissing its writ petition seeking to cancel the contracts awarded to GVR-ACS and GMR- Fraport for modernisation of Mumbai and Delhi airports respectively. The petitioner in its appeal has alleged that there was hidden agenda and the decision of the government in denying contract to the Reliance.....

Shankarcharya case: SC Judge wants to withdraw

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) Mr Justice B.N. Srikrishna, presiding judge of the bench of the Supreme Court today told the petitioner Pontiff Kanchi Jayanendra Saraswati that he wanted to withdraw from the case due to personal reasons. The hearing of Kanchi Shankarcharya's petition seeking change of the public prosecutor in the trial of Shanakraman murder case in which Shankarcharya is the main accused was adjourned till May 1 with directions to place the matter.....
