Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 24 (UNI) As part of modernisation of passenger information system in a big way, Trivandrum Division of Southern Railway has installed 13 touch screen passenger information kiosks in various stations.

The system started with information on reservation related enquiries such as reservation status, fare information, timetable and coach position, an SR release said here today.

From this week onwards the passenger information kiosk software would be upgraded, integrating train running information and reservation availability. This would facilitate passengers to locate the required train almost on real time basis, it said.

The touch screen network is now connected to the computerised train control system and passengers could get information about current position of the train. The information would be updated every three minutes so that passengers could know where exactly the train was three minutes before the time of enquiry.

The facility also provides information about the avaliability of berths/seats in any train in the allowed period of booking.

Given the train number and date, the system gave accommodation availability of that train on that date.

The Division would install 16 more passenger information touch screen kiosks by the end of May. The above systems, which are installed in this Division, are based on the latest Information Technology products and procedures.

All passenger information touch screens in the Trivandrum Division are working on WI-FI technology using the band width of the Railways own Optic Fibre Cable (OFC) system, the release added.
