Protests against sealing continue, 391 shops sealed on 18th day

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) continues its sealing drive, with 391 shops having been shut in various residential areas on the 18th day today, even as protests against the operation are on.

The BJP has been claiming that its Jail Bharo Abhiyan had forced the government to consider introduction of a Bill in the forthcoming session of Parliament to stop the ongoing operation.

BJP Delhi Pradesh president Harsh Vardhan has said that its 16-day jail Bharo abhiyan had forced the Congress led UPA government at the Centre, to consider introducing a Bill for stopping sealing of shops in the forthcoming session of Parliament.

''It proves that the Congress has been compelled to kneel down before the pressure of the BJP, traders and the people of Delhi,'' Dr Harshvardhan said in a statement here yesterday.

He said the BJP would continue with its campaign until the sealings and demolitions did not stop completely.

Meanwhile, the relay hunger strike by several Congress MLAs against the sealing operation entered its 11th day today.

Congress MLA from Sadar bazar, Rajesh Jain today sat on a hunger strike at Bara Tooti chowk. The call for the relay hunger strike has been given by former DPCC president Subhash Chopra and Congress leader Parvez Hashmi.

The venue of the hunger strike will shift to Sarojini Nagar market with Congress MLA from the area Ashok Ahuja, doing a sit-in.

A delegation of Delhi traders today met Union Urban Development Minister Ajay Maken and submitted a memorandum to him urging the Centre to promulgate an Ordinance or introduce a Bill in the coming Parliament session to regularise all commercials units and unauthorised constructions.

Mr Maken, on his part, said the government was seized of the problem and accordingly it had prayed to the Apex court for extension of time to take effective steps to deal with the problem.

Meanwhile, the MCD, in its sealing drive, has sealed 391 shops.

At the same time, it de-sealed 57 shops today.

While 86 shops were sealed between 1700 hours and 2000 hours on Saturday, 4 units were de-sealed between 1700 hours and 2000 hours on Saturday.

A maximum number of 52 units were sealed in central zone, 50 in Shahdara (South) and 41 in Karol Bagh.

With today's sealing, a total of 6995 shops in the residential areas have been sealed since the operation began on March 29.

Sealing action has already been completed in the city area.
