PM constitutes 3 member committee on Narmada

Berlin, Apr 24 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today constituted a three-member high level committee, headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General V K Shunglu, to oversee the relief and rehabilitation schemes of the Sardar Sarovar Project on the Narmada river in Gujarat.

Dr Jayaprakash Narain, Convener, Lok Satta, and Dr G K Chaddha, former Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University are the two other members of the Committee which will be known as the SSP Relief and Rehabilitiation Oversight Group.

The Committee, which will submit its report within three months, has been asked to conduct a sample survey to ascertain the status of rehabilitation of the families ousted from their villages by the construction of the dam, Dr Sanjaya Baru, PM's Media Advisor, told reporters here.

According to the terms of reference, the Committee will gather information on the total number of families affected by submergence, those who have not received the relief and rehabilitation package as per norms and check and verify whether alternative land was offered to the oustees and whether it is true that some did not accept land voluntarily.

The committee has been asked to recommend a system to ensure that all families who will be affected by submergence when the dam's height is increased to 121.92 metres get relief and rehabilitation.

Also, it would be ensured that the affected families receive relief within three months as per norms of the Narmada Accord, the Supreme Court and the Grievances Redressal Authority, set up by the Madhya Pradesh Government.

Ganja seized weighing 35 kg in city

Chennai, Apr 24 (UNI) Police seized 35 kgs of ganja from a locked house of a hotel employee in Choolaimedu area in the city today. Police said, on a tip off, a police party broke in to the house and seized the stock. Lucknow, Apr 24 (UNI) Police today arrested two people for selling and damaging a graveyard in the Uttar Pradesh capital. SSP (Lucknow) Ashutosh Pandey said here Narendra Maurya had allegedly sold two bighas of a graveyard in Aashiana area here to Vimlesh Tiwari for Rs 4 crore.
