Mahajan put on dialysis; continues to be critical

Mumbai, Apr 24 : Senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, who underwent a second surgery last night after he developed complications in the kidneys, has been put on dialysis and his condition continues to be critical.

Hinduja hospital Director (administration) Anupam Verma told reporters today that Mr Mahajan is still on the ventilator.

He is under medication for his blood pressure.

He said the BJP leader's kidney functions are poor and, therefore, he has been put on dialysis. Mr Mahajan is being monitored closely for his pancreatic and liver injuries even though his liver bleeding has stopped.

Mr Verma said efforts are on by Dr G B Davar and his team to stabilise him before contemplating any further intervention.

Meanwhile, Dr Stefen Dave, vice president of the Australian College of Surgeons, has arrived here to to see Mr Mahajan, on the request of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Dr Dave, a trauma specialist, has been conducting training for doctors across India for the last six years.

Dr Dave said he was in Ahmedabad as a part of a training programme and was asked by Mr Modi to visit Mr Mahajan in Mumbai.

He said he was impressed by the treatment given to Mr Mahajan and added that a high-level British team of doctors is already present and appropriate medication and decisions are in place.

Mr Mahajan has sustained three bullet wounds when his brother Pravin allegedly shot him at his Worli residence here on Saturday morning.

Car bomb kills 3, wounds 25 in central Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Apr 24 (Reuters) A car bomb targeting an Iraqi police patrol exploded in central Baghdad today, killing at least three people and wounding 25 others, police said. They said the blast occurred near the Ministry of Health. There were no further details. The attack, which followed a rocket blast that killed seven people yesterday, comes as Prime Minister-designate Jawad al- Maliki starts the daunting task of forming a national unity government that many see.....

DMK's Ministerial berths due to MDMK: Vaiko

Madurai, Apr 24 (UNI) Continuing his tirade against the DMK leadership, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko has reiterated the charge that the DMK had garnered ministerial berths at the Centre by including the MDMK in its tally of MPs. 24 per cent voting in Kashmir, no impact of militant boycott call

Baramulla, Apr 24 (UNI) About 24 per cent voters today cast their ballots in three Assembly constituencies of Pattan, Rafiabad and Sangrama amid thick security blanket despite militant outfits and separatist groups urging the people to boycott polls. An official spokesman said about 24 per cent polling was recorded till 1100 hrs in these constituecies with no report of any major untoward incident. Long queues could be seen outside the polling stations much before the time......
