India assures Algeria of suppoprt to its President's Nobel bid

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) India today assured Algeria that its request for support for nomination of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize would receive the ''highest consideration.'' The assurance was given by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to Algerian Ambassador in New Delhi Dr Noureddine Bardad-Daidj who called on him (Mr Chatterjee) here.

The request was contained in a letter from Algerian National Assembly President Amar Saadani which the Ambassador handed over to Mr Chatterjee.

During the meeting, Mr Chatterjee said globalisation had to be undertaken with a human face to ensure that its benefits percolated down to the needy in society.

''Acceptability of any change in the system depends upon the benefits it brings to the people...'' he said in an interaction with Dr Bardad-Daidj.

Mr Chatterjee said India and Algeria, who had been cooperating with each other on various fora in the fight against terrorism, should try to further strengthen the friendship through exchanges of Parliamentary, academic and cultural delegations.

''We have formed the Indo-Algeria Parliamentary Friendship Group for increased interaction between the people of the two nations,'' he said.

Dr Bardad-Daidj said there is scope for further enhancing bilateral trade between the two countries.
