ICC appoints Srinath as match referee

New Delhi, Apr 24 (UNI) Former India fast bowler Javagal Srinath was today appointed as match referee by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Bangalore-based cricketer will join former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd and Australian Alan Hurst in the panel of second tier of part-time match referees.

Sri Lankans Ranjan Madugalle and Roshan Mahanama, South African Mike Procter and New Zealand's Jeff Crowe were retained in the Elite panel of full-time match referees after a review conducted by ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed and Chairman of Cricket Committee Sunil Gavaskar.

England's Chris Broad, who had twice called Indian offspinner Harbhajan Singh for chucking, was axed from the the panel.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had also recommended Dilip Vengsarkar, Robin Singh, Kiran More and Shivlal Yadav, besides Srinath, for the post.

But, the ICC selected the former fast bowler, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah told UNI on telephone.

Srinath, who had played 67 Tests, had taken 236 wickets at an average of 30.49, while claiming 315 scalps at 28.08 in 229 one-day internationals.

Referee switched for FA Cup final over pressure fears

LONDON, Apr 24 (Reuters) Referee Mike Dean has lost his place at the FA Cup final to Alan Wiley over fears that he could have faced pressure from Liverpool fans living near his Merseyside home. The switch was decided by the Football Association after Liverpool lined up a final on May 13 in Cardiff against West Ham United following last weekend's semi-finals. The FA said in a statement that it ''has complete faith in Mike Dean's.....

Fukuoka applies to host 2016 Olympics

TOKYO, Apr 24 (Reuters) The southern Japanese city of Fukuoka formally joined the country's capital Tokyo today in the race to host the 2016 Olympics. Fukuoka mayor Hirotaro Yamasaki presented his city's bid proposal to the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), heralding the start of a two-horse race to become Japan's 2016 candidate. ''We are expecting to see a plan of the highest quality that will be recognised as such by the world,'' JOC president Tsunekasu Takeda.....

CAS finds FIFA out of step with world anti-doping code

BERN, Switzerland, Apr 24 (Reuters) The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has told world soccer's governing body FIFA that its anti-doping regulations do not correspond fully to those of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The court added, however, that FIFA is not legally obliged, under Swiss law, to modify any of its existing rules. FIFA and WADA both made separate applications for an advisory opinion from the court following years of wrangling over the differences.....
